Dermabrasian
Gerneral Information
Dermabrasion is a skin resurfacing technique first developed in
the 1950's. It is used primarily to improve acne scars but it can
also improve chicken pox marks and scars resulting from accidents
or disease. In some cases it can be used to deep facial lines and
wrinkles, severe sun damage and pigmentation disorders. During the
procedure, The physician moves a rapidly spinning wheel gently over
the surface of the scar causing the topmost layers of the skin to
be worn away.
During a dermabrasion procedure, you may
be required to be admitted to the hospital. A topical numbing agent,
nerve block or general anesthesia may be used depending on the size
and location of the scars.
Side Effects:
- Dermabrasion can precipitate herpes simplex infection (cold sores) causing unpleasant blistering and possibly permanent scarring.
- Hyperpigmentation (darkeing of the skin) may occur in skin types III and IV (Hispanic, Asian, and Mediterranean ethnicities).Dermabrasion procedure.
- Infection may occur after the procudure and antibiotics may be prescribed as a precaution.
