Daily Care

You can control most acne with good basic daily skin care techniques that include the following:

  • Wash with a gentle cleanser. Products such as facial scrubs, astringents and masks generally aren't recommended because they can cause inflammation and irritation.
  • If you are going to use over the counter products, look for acne lotion to dry excess oil and promote peeling. Products containing benzoyl peroxide, resorcinol or salicylic acid as the active ingredients work well.
  • Avoid oily or greasy cosmetics, sunscreens, hair-styling products or acne concealers. Use products labeled "water-based" or "noncomedogenic."
  • Keep your hair clean and off your face, and avoid touching your face with your hands excessively.
  • Don't pick or squeeze blemishes. Picking or squeezing can cause infection or scarring.
