Low Self-esteem

Another negative psychological effect that acne can have is low self esteem.  Acne patients sometimes avoid eye contact, grow their hair long to cover the face or wear heavy meakup to conceal the acne.  These behaviors may be indicative of a patient that is having problems with self esteem.

The teenage years and young adulthood are a very important time in the psychological development spectrum.  It is also a time when looking different makes it hard to fit in.  Low self-esteem can be a product of not being able to easily fit in wiith the crowd, and problem acne is one reason for not being accepted by peers.

Low self esteem and isolation caused by problem acne are major reasons why some teens or young adults to not participate fully in social activities, extracurricular hobbies and even sports.  Effective acne treatments are the only way to combat the negative social and psychological effects of acne.
