Isolation

One of the most dramatic psychological effects of living with acne is social isolation and withdrawal.  Teens and young adults living with acne often isolate themselves from social situations and environments where they would have to interact with others.  Those suffering with acne often feel that others are staring at them, talking about them or even feeling sorry for them.  These feelings cause many to withdraw from environments such as social dinners, parties, movies, or sporting events.

Acne sufferers can be the subject of cruel taunts, especially during the important developmental teenage years.  Some find it hard to form new relationships, especially with the opposite sex.  At a time when teenagers are learning to form relationships, those with acne may lack the self-confidence to go out and make these bonds. They can become shy and even reclusive.

Although psychological support can help, many teens and young adults do not start to feel good about themselves until their acne has been treated.  Click to learn more about the best acne treatment options for you.
