Topical Retinoids

Topical retinods are a class of medications that are derived from Vitamin A. Creams and gels may contain retinol and retinaldehyde, which are available over the counter, as well as tretinoin or isotretinoin which require a physician's prescription. Adapalene (Differin) is a related prescription medication.

Topical retinoids can be used anywhere on the body, but are most commonly applied to the face and neck. Retinoids are used to treat acne because they incease the cell turnover, which in turn decreases the scale that contirbutes to acne formation. Retinoids can irritate the skin and they increase the incidence of sunburn.
