What are corticosteroids?

Corticosteroids, also referred to as "steroids" or "cortisone", are a group of anti-inflammatory agents used to treat many different conditions and diseases. Topical corticosteroids are used in many inflammatory conditions and are available in a variety of forms such as creams, ointments, lotions, eye preparations and eardrops. Corticosteroids are also commonly used in combination with other antibacterials. Corticosteroids or "steroids" are not related to the anabolic steroids that are used by athletes to increase performance.

How do corticosteroids work to treat acne?

Corticosteroids work by suppressing inflammation. The drugs can be used topically, orally,or even injected to treat acne. Corticosteroids are often used with severe or specialized types of acne, especially cystic acne.

What are the side effects of corticosteroids?

Side effects of corticosteroids vary based on the individual, the dosage, and the mothod of delivery (oral, topical, injection). Common side effects may include increased appetite, indegestion and nervousness or restlessness. Contact your local acne physician to discuss the potential benefits and side effects of corticosteroids.
