Oral Contraception

Oral contraceptives are sometimes used to lessen the affects of acne. Certain oral birth control products work to fight acne by counteracting the effect of male hormones (such as testosterone). Oral contraceptives containing estrogen, such a Estrostep and Ortho Tri-Cyclen 28, can be very effective at treating acne, and normally, the full benefit of the contraceptives on acne usually occurs within three to four months.

Possible side effects include:

  • Nausea
  • Weight gain
  • Spotting
  • Breast tenderness.

To learn more about this treatment, contact your local acne physician.
