Hyperpigmentation

Hyperpigmentation is the skin's response to the healing process associated with inflammation.  More accurately referred to as post inflammatory hyperpigmentation, the condition is most common in individuals of Hispanic, Asian or African American descent.  Hyperpigmentation occurs as the body responds to the acne infection.  The body produces melanin, which causes dark brown or black spots on and around the acne lesion.

Hyperpgimentation is often referred to as acne scarring.  Because hyperpgimentation is not permanent, it can be more easily treated than other types of acne scarring.  Bleaching creams such as hydroquinone and laser treatments are both treatment options for hyperpigmentation.
