Erythromycin
General Information:
Erythromycin is an antibiotic that works by killing acne
bacteria. Erythromycin is particularly useful in individuals
that are allergic to penicillin. Erythromycin is active against
many bacterial organisms, but unfortunately, increasing resistance
is being reported. Erythromycin is best taken fasting or just before
meals.
Side Effects:
Erythromycin is generally well tolerated
and is thought to be safe for pregnant and breast feeding women.
The following side effects are rare but can occur:
- Erythromycin can cause gastrointestinal disturbances including
nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, diarrhoea, and loss of appetite.
- Erythromycin can cause liver reactions. these reactions are
common in those with pre-existing liver disease. Warning signs
include dark urine, light stools, yellow eyes and skin yellowing
or jaundice.
- Erythromycin can cause allergic rashes such as hives.
- Erythromycin can hearing loss, and is more likely on high doses
in those with kidney disease.
- Erythromycin has been known to cause life threatening arrhythmias
(irregularities of the heartbeat).
