Azelaic Acid
General Information
Azelaic acid is commonly used topical treatment that works by reducing the number of acne bacteria in the follicle. It is a natural material produced by a yeast that lives normally on normal skin. Azelaic acid is used as a topical treatment for mild to moderate acne, and may be combined with oral antibiotics.
- Azaleic acid is an antibacterial that reduces the growth of bacteria in the follicle.
- Azaleic acid is a scavenger of free radicals and therefore reduces inflammation.
- Azelaic acid will not result in bacterial resistance to antibiotics, photosensitivity or bleaching of skin or clothing.
- Azelaic acid helps reduce pigmentation. It's particularly useful for darker skinned patients whose acne spots leave persistent brown marks.

Azelaic acid is nontoxic and is well tolerated by most subjects. However, those with very sensitive skin or who suffer from eczema, may find it irritating..
