Minocycline

Minocycline is an antibiotic that's used to control acne.  Minocycline works by killing the p.acne bacteria that contribute to formation of an acne lesion.

Minocycline comes in a capsule, tablet, or liquid and is taken orally.  Normally it's taken twice per day but can be taken up to four times a day.   Minocycline may be taken with or without food, but can cause upset stomach with some patients.

Before taking minocycline:

  • Make sure you do not have an allergy to minocycline, tetracycline, doxycycline or sulfites.
  • Always let your acne physician know if you are taking any other prescription and nonprescription medications especially antacids, anticoagulants (blood thinners), penicillin or vitamins.
  • Make sure you alert your doctor if you have diabetes, kidney or liver disease.
  • Let your acne physician know if you are pregnant or planning on becoming pregnant.

Are there any side effects?

Side effects from minocycline are uncommon, but they can occur with some patients. You should speak with your acne physician immediately when encountering these side effects.  These side effects include:

  • upset stomach
  • itching of the rectum or vagina
  • diarrhea
  • dizziness or lightheadedness
  • furry darkening or black discoloration of the tongue
  • skin rash
  • unusual bleeding or bruising
  • pain or discomfort in the mouth
  • throat sores
  • fever or chills
