Erythromycin
What is Erythromycin?
Erythromycin is a member of the macrolide antibiotic drug family. Erythromycin kills bacteria in the body, and is used to treat many different types of bacterial infections in addition to acne. Other conditions include tonsillitis, bronchitis, pneumonia, chlamydia, gonorrhea, and others.
How does erythromycin work to treat acne?
Erythromycin works by preventing acne bacteria from dividing and reproducing. Without reproduction, the acne bacteria eventually dies.
What are the side effects of erythromycin?
Erythromycin is generally well tolerated by most. The following side effects occur infrequently.
- Erythromycin can cause nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, diarrhea and loss of appetite.
- Erythromycin can cause hearing loss and is more likely when using high doses in those with kidney disease.
- Erythromycin can cause liver reactions in those with pre-existing liver disease. Signs are dark urine, light stools, yellow eyes and skin (jaundice).
- Erythromycin can cause allergic rashes such as hives.
- Erythromycin can cause heart arrhythmias (irregularities of the heartbeat).
